This paper investigates the science of linguistics through a theoretical and historical perspective. It defines linguistics as the scientific study of language in its structures and functions ,while differentiating between the concepts of language, tongue ,and speech. The study also highlights the distinctive features of human language such as symbolism, creativity, systematic organization, and capacity for development in addition it reviews the most prominent theories on the origin of language, including the divine view, natural sound theory, imitation theory, social theory, and the convention hypothesis. Furthermore, the paper presents the historical evolution of linguistic studies across different Civilizations: the Egyptians, Indians, Greeks ,and Arabs, with particular emphasis on the Arab contribution in establishing linguistic sciences to safeguard the Qur’an. The findings conclude that the theoretical and historical foundations of linguistics are indispensable for understanding Qur’anic linguistics and for appreciating its rhetorical, phonological, and semantic uniqueness.
